Culinary Leaders as a Catalyst for Change

By studying the factors and influences in historical & local chefs' lives, students will develop their own intrapersonal intelligence for the factors leading to their own successes in the future (from middle school and beyond). This unit covers Julia Child, Niki Nakayama, Edna Lewis, and other local Chattanooga chefs/specialists!

Course Outcome
How can we, as unique individuals, develop a deep understanding that there are many factors in a person’s life that affect success, which can help us be more self-smart for our own successes in the future?

Students will connect their learning about influential athletes, like Jackie Robinson, being catalysts for change (EL curriculum) through additional studies in the kitchen. All standards are TN State Standards.

Standard 1:

RI.5.3: Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.

Standard 2:

RI.5.9: Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.

Standard 3:

W.5.9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

Connecting to the Multiple Intelligences:

Interpersonal: Students will develop a stronger skillset of empathy, collaboration, communication, and partnership as they learn the factors of individual success while overcoming stressful working conditions to create a tasty culinary creation in each person’s honor.

Intrapersonal: Students will make personal reflections about how everyone has key factors that help lead to future success. They will also begin to take ownership and awareness of their own skills in the kitchen along with their willingness to try new, unique meals that push the boundaries of their taste buds.

Naturalistic: Students will partner with the local Master Gardeners to learn that influencing people into large successes must start small (& often locally).

Bodily: Students will practice their hands-on skills focused on kitchen tools, placement in the kitchen, and ways to overcome stressful conditions.

Verbal: Students will be able to verbalize how specific actions as a team develop stronger work habits and higher levels of performance. They can verbally explain to others what makes each culinary chef one-of-a-kind and what factors led to their success.

Logical: Students will show logic while developing strategies to limit waste in the kitchen, while also making text-to-self reflections within their own lives.
