Magnificent Tools!

First Grade students will extend their learning from the book: The Magnificent Thing, while using different culinary tools and studying different culinary professions to create their own MAGNIFICENT, edible creations throughout the unit.

Course Outcome
How can we, as growing culinary masters, create many magnificent dishes that use different tools while highlighting different professions around our community, so we can help practice the 4Cs (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication) and appreciate our delicious city?

This unit is an extension of the EL Curriculum: Module 1 1st Grade unit on Tools & Work. (extending the standards expected throughout the quarter)

Additional connecting standards:

RL.1.4: Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

RL.1.3: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details

SS 1.23 Use correct words and phrases related to chronology and time, including: past, present, and future

SL.1.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

TN 1.25 Compare ways people lived in the past to how they live today, including: forms of communication, modes of transportation, and types of clothing.

Day 1: I can show perseverance while working in the garden.  I can explain why tools are important while gardening. Community Partner Visitation! 

Day 2: I can show perseverance while using a new tool.  I can show perseverance while working in the garden.

Day 3: I can show perseverance while using a new tool. I can explain how chopsticks are a special tool to use while eating.

Day 4: I can show perseverance while using a new tool. I can explain how rolling pins are important to pizza makers, bakers, and other culinary careers. Community Partner Visit (Goodfellas Pizzeria)

Day 5: I can show perseverance while using a new tool. I can explain how cookie cutters, forks, and other tools are important to bakers and cake decorators.

Day 6: I can show perseverance while following a recipe using new tools. I can model the 4Cs while using many new tools like a growing chef.

Day 7: I can show the 4Cs while following a recipe using my different tools.
